We believe that any type of treatment needs to consider the whole person. So although we separate the mind, the body and the spirit we do so primarily to enable you to explore therapies that tend to be thought of that way.
Therapy for the mind typically is thought of as psychotherapy, which is the treatment of mental or emotional problems by psychological means. Many think of this as counseling and will often refer to a therapist as a counselor.
Therapists or counselors can be psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, mental health counselors or marriage and family therapists. As a whole they fall under the category of mental health professionals. Psychiatrists are physicians (medical doctors). They are less likely to conduct psychotherapy with patients and often will only prescribe medication.
Each professional needs to be licensed in the state in which they practice. In order to become licensed most therapists go through a rigorous supervision period to be allowed to sit for the state-licensing exam.
Choosing a therapist to work with can be a little daunting. Although the therapist is licensed he or she may not have had the training or experience necessary to work with the particular problems you may be having.
